Twitter apologises for locking Aisha Yesufu’s account

Microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, has unlocked and tendered an apology to activist Aisha Yesufu.

In a statement shared by the #BringBackOurGirls(BBOG) co-founder, Twitter said;

“We’re writing to let you know that your account is now unlocked. We’re are sorry for the inconvenience…

“We apologize for the mix-up and hope to see back on Twitter soon.

“If you need to get in touch with us again, please file a report through your Twitter app or our forms page, as this account isn’t monitored for replies. Thanks, Twitter.”

Reacting to Twitter’s statement, Aisha wrote “Thank you, everyone, for your voices. I have gotten a mail from @Twitter and I am back.

“I will continue to be a voice. My voice is not for myself alone but for so many others who unfortunately did not get that education that so many of us take for granted to have a voice.

“Apology accepted @Twitter kindly restore back my following. Thank you.”

WuzupNaija gathered that on Thursday, Aisha’s account was locked shortly after she voiced out about Buhari’s government using some Arabic verses.

That the President is today a Muslim like myself is not a reason that I should not criticise and make demands on him. That I voted for the President in 2015 is not a reason I should not criticise the President. IT SHOULD NOT BE ABOUT PERSONAL INCLINATION! ITS ABOUT JUSTICE!

“You praised me when I called Goodluck Ebele Jonathan incompetent, clueless and inept. You insult me for calling Muhammadu Buhari @MBuhari incompetent, clueless and inept. Why? PERSONAL INCLINATION? Are we not facing the same injustice? Is it because you have access to power? her tweet reads in part.

Meanwhile, social media influencers, activists and Nigerians had condemned and demanded that Twitter restore her account.

A former minister of education and also BBOG co-founder, Oby Ezekwesili, tweeted in support of Yesufu.

“This is unjust @Twitter and every sensible Nigerian would tell you so.

@AishaYesufu is the last person whose Voice should be shut down by Twitter. Do not unwittingly empower those who detest Citizens’ Voice that holds a government @NigeriaGov accountable. That’s all Aisha does.”
