Twitter divided over Wole Soyinka’s flight experience
Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka’s recent encounter aboard a flight where he was ordered by a young Nigerian to vacate his seat has sparked mixed reactions on Twitter.
WuzupNaija reports that oil magnate and CEO of Sahara Group, Tonye Cole, took to Instagram to share the story of how the young man ordered the Nobel Laureate to vacate his seat close to the flight window.

He noted that despite several pleas from cabin crew and other passengers, the young passenger insisted on occupying his seat, telling Soyinka to vacate the seat and the literary icon reportedly obliged.
The post has, however, generated mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media.
Many Twitter users justified the young man’s action saying a younger Soyinka would have done exactly same, while others were of the opinion that the young man should have accorded him some respect based on his age and status.

This is why we are the way we are. Let humans get away with doing the wrong thing because they’re an “elder”.
Prof Wole Soyinka knew he was wrong to take a seat that doesn’t belong to him. So he quietly did the right thing when the owner came. https://t.co/oyiQN5EJAC

So this is only because it’s wole Soyinka and it would have been fine if it was any random 70 year old ? Or isn’t that what Nigerian twitter is trying to suggest

I really think Wole Soyinka might just have been cheekily hoping the person in the seat wouldn’t turn up. The caption says he quietly moved. The problem is the Tony guy who posted it. Embarrassing.

I went on the online to book window seat. I reach inside plane and I see Wole Soyinka in the seat that I had booked since and paid money. I tell him I want to seat in MY own seat and y’all telling me I’m rude and mannerless for demanding that Wole Soyinka stand up from MY seat?

Let’s not distract today’s big issue with Wole Soyinka, old man knew what was right and since young man insisted on his right, the intellectual man in him made him do the right thing
The real issue today is INEC server children have been discombobulated by the Appeal Court panel

The only reason I will see wole soyinka in my sit and not talk is because its wole soyinka and I’m a huge fan not because aN eLdEr iS iN mY sIt.

What is even funny is that Wole Soyinka, who had the direct encounter with the young man, quietly vacated the seat because he knew the young man was right no matter how we all look at it.
It is Tonye cole that was sitting on the other side that is getting angry. Limau!
— Uncle Demola (@OmoGbajaBiamila) June 24, 2019
Wole Soyinka knew that he was wrong and that was why he left the seat to the owner. This one Tonye Cole is tearing paynt over a matter that does not concern him in the name of preaching respect, is doing me somehow.
If you’re wrong, admit you’re wrong. Stop this stupid ageism!
— Uncle Demola (@OmoGbajaBiamila) June 24, 2019
This is interesting…
Anyway I agree with the young man.
And let’s not get emotional like you all care to death about Wole Soyinka cos the moment he makes a comment against any politician you like you are ready to drag him by his hair.
The Prof sat on the wrong seat, PERIOD!!! https://t.co/02Lv75WhmQ— Wale Gates ???? (@walegates) June 24, 2019
A young Wole Soyinka would have probably done the same by “rightfully” claiming what is his. ?… We attach “too” much home training to some issues we shouldn’t.
— STAY WICKED ? (@solomatic007) June 24, 2019
Lmao , same Wole Soyinka that would have refused to stand up when he was younger , write book join on top the matter ????.

The dude who asked Wole Soyinka to get up from his seat, do not be deceived by twitter supporters, you’ll surely regret your action.
I’m very sure there were other vacant window seats on that aircraft. Very few people actually sit in their alloted seats.
— Mavoro Matthew (@OrigboKay) June 24, 2019
Prof Wole Soyinka shouldn’t have sit on someone else seat, he knows his seat number, I thought his Ego makes him do that and the young man shouldn’t have asked him to stand up from the seat….But who knows maybe prof has once disrespect elder during is youth, karma is a bitch?
— IREFUSE2GIVUP (@tzfame) June 24, 2019
Lowkey some people like staying at the window side while traveling by Air. So don’t blame the man that wanted to stay at his own seat. Maybe is the reason he told wole Soyinka to leave his seat.
— whynottony (@zephyrtony) June 24, 2019
Wait, what has Wole Soyinka done wrong now? Yes he sat on somebody’s seat, but he stood up when the owner complained. So tell me, kini problem yin gan na?
Somebody even tweeted that Wole Soyinka was hoping that the owner would give him the sit because of his personality.
— Ali (@The_hanifah) June 24, 2019
The funniest thing about this Wole Soyinka’s story is that if the age and roles were reversed, the Wole Soyinka we all know would have demanded to have his seat back.
