Anambra: Two killed, many injured as lorry crashes into motor park (Photos)

A 911 tipper on Wednesday crashed into a motor park in Upper Iweka, Onitsha, Anambra State and crushed two persons to death.

Others who sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash were rushed to a nearby hospital.

It was gathered that the tipper driver lost control following brake failure and rammed into a motor park, leaving scores injured.

An eyewitness told our correspondent “scores were wounded in the accident. I counted not less than 15 persons who were taking to the hospital by security operatives. They were badly injured. Two persons died on the spot.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Haruna Mohammed confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He said corpses of the victims had been deposited in the mortuary for postmortem examination, while the tipper driver had been arrested.

He said:

“A 911 Tipper with Registration XA445NSK driven by one Okafor Patrick Ndubuisi ,aged 55 years of Ogbauru Street, Okpoko lost control while in motion along Enugu/Onitsha Expressway by defunct NITEL Onitsha and crashed into PN Emerah park. As a result, eight persons sustained varying degrees of injury.

“Police operatives attached to CPS Onitsha quickly mobilised to the scene and rushed victims to Toronto hospital where the doctor confirmed two female victims dead on arrival while six others are responding to treatment.

“Meanwhile, corpses have been deposited at the mortuary for postmortem examination and obstruction cleared to enable free flow of traffic.

Mohammed added;

“The Tipper driver was arrested and case under Investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The command had asked the public whose relations were not seen to check at Toronto hospital Onitsha for possible identification of the victims.

The state Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Pascal Anigbo, who also confirmed the crash, blamed it on brake failure.
