Ride-hailing services Uber, Bolt (Taxify) and others have reportedly been banned from picking passengers at Nigerian airports.

A social media user @oneusualsuspect had posted a signpost erected at an airport in the country warning operators of the taxi-hailing services not to pick up passengers at the airport.

He posted a photo of the signpost and captioned:

“So @FAAN_Official has issued a directive via this billboard to state that @UberNigeria, @Boltapp_ng amongst others are not allowed to pick up passengers from the airport. The fine for this ranges from 10,000 naira. Please be aware.”

The signpost read:

Public notice: Taxi calls, Bolt, Easyride, Taxify, UBER…etc are not allowed to pick passengers from the airport… Management.”

It didn’t take long before the tweet sparked an uproar on Twitter as Nigerians take to the microblogging site to condemn the directive.

However, reacting to the tweet, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said the directive didn’t originate from the agency.

FAAN tweeted via its official handle @FAAN_official:

The message did not originate from FAAN. Uber and taxify are free to drop passengers at our airports. https://t.co/dTJb1muhBO

“The sign post has been removed, be assured the issue would be addressed,” FAAN added.
