UN shows interest in 14-year-old Nigerian refugee in Chad who wants to be a female footballer
The dream of a 14-year-old Nigerian girl simply identified as Adama who is presently in a refugee camp in Chad has caught the attention of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women.
Adama, unlike others who may have resigned to fate over their present predicament, wants to play football and she has shown determination to pursue the dream and make it a reality.
The teenager, who seems not to be deterred after insecurity in the northern part of Nigeria forced her out of home and made her a refugee in Chad, told UN Women that her dream was further ignited after she once saw women playing football on the television.
Despite being told by some boys at the refugee camp that what she aspires to become is only for men, Adama said such statement further spur her to challenge them to a match.

The UN Women, an entity working for the empowerment of women, shared Adama’s story via its verified Twitter handle @UN_Women.
The entity tweeted her photo with the caption:
“Adama, 14, Nigerian refugee in Chad:
“One day I want to become a football player. Of course women can play football, I saw it on TV once.
“Some boys in the camp say that football is only for men, but when they say that I take the ball and I tell them, try me!”
