VC harps on national re-orientation to tackle rape cases

Published

Prof. Charles Ayo, the Vice-Chancellor of Trinity University, Ota, on Tuesday called on government at all levels to embark on national re-orientation in order to tackle the incessant rape cases in the country.

Ayo made the call in an interview with reporters in Ota, Ogun.

He spoke against the backdrop of the gang rape of an undergraduate student at the University of Benin last week.

Ayo, a former Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, noted that the incessant rape cases in the country were unfortunate, saying this called for action.

“The National Orientation Agency needs to redouble its efforts in addressing this menace as the nation is fast eroding its values,” he said.

Ayo attributed the causes of rape in the country to moral decadence, lack of fear of God, and respect for mankind.

He implored the government at all levels to intensify efforts in addressing the rape challenge in the country.

“In the primary, secondary and tertiary level, the nation has witnessed rape cases due to absolute moral decadence.

“Something must be done urgently to serve as a deterrent to others who have the motive or intention of committing a similar crime, ” he said.

The don noted that most of the criminals who engaged in such acts had an evil mind.

Ayo also called for effective community policing across the country to check the incessant rape cases.

He noted that kidnapping and other social vices could be addressed through effective community policing in the country.
