Viral video: Police officers allegedly shoot protesting Caleb University students
Students of Caleb University, Imota in Ikorodu area of Lagos, went on a rampage on Friday as they protested the suspension of two final year students who allegedly flouted the University’s new rule.
Reports said in the course of the protest the police officers who were instructed to manage the crisis allegedly shot at two students.
In a viral video, the angry students were seen throwing stones at the police officers while police fired gunshots to disperse the students.
WuzupNaija gathered that the University’s management had forbidden male and female students from staying outside their hostels beyond 7pm and before 8am.
The new rule shared on social media says:
“Being found with the opposite sex after 7pm and before 8am is an offence.”
Two students said to be Faculty Presidents were suspended on Friday by the university management for allegedly flouting the new rules.
Following their suspension, other students took to the university campus to protest.
According to a source,
“The students who are the co-presidents of the College of social and management Sciences (COSMAS) were outside their hostel on May 6, a day to the cultutral day of the Faculty’s annual social week. They were in the company of a decorator hired for the event
“Apparently the school has no guest house where guests that are spending the night in the school can sleep over, so they were trying to arrange a place at the MAsters students hostel for the decorator to sleepover.
“This was the reason why they were outside their hostel till 8:40pm against the 8:30 stipulated by the University’s new rule.
The security came out to harras them and sent them back to the hostel, as the students were trying to explain themselves to the security, their green cards were seized and taken to the gate.
They filed a report against them and they had to face the students disciplinary committee (SDC) on Thursday 23rd May.
“The students were summoned today (Friday) before 6am and were told to leave the campus because they have been suspended for eight weeks.”
The source further noted that the students were supposed to defend their final year projects in two weeks time but were handed an eight-week suspension which irked the students and sparked the protest.
It was in the process of the protest that the management caled in the police who allegedly shot two students.
