Why FG cancelled plan to establish film village in Kano will surprise you
The Federal government has cancelled its plan to build a world class film village in Kano State, following social media outcry and opposition from Muslim clerics, BBC reported on Monday.
The government said it has decided to call off the project because Muslims clerics in the region hold that it would promote immorality.
Another reason given by the government was that people on social media called on them to stop the plan. An aide to President Buhari told local media that the president has listened to the people’s concerns.
Earlier in July, the government had announced that it was investing more than N3billion ($10m; £7.6m) into the project as part of efforts to improve the Hausa language film industry known as Kannywood. The government argued the village would create thousands of job opportunities and promote cultural activities.
Member of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin had made the announcement during an interactive session with Kannywood filmmakers.
“The film village has cinematography centre, 400-capacity auditorium for training, hostel, sound stage, eatery block, three-star hotel, shopping mall, stadium, clinic, among others,” he had said.
According to Jibrin, the Federal Government would release 1billion Naira for the kickoff of the 20-hectare film village, which would be modeled like a film center in China and India.
