A Ugandan woman identified as Sofiat Mutesi who was said to be expecting twins was awed on Saturday night after she was delivered of quintuplets – three girls and two boys, the country’s Daily Monitor paper reports.

Sofiat, 37, from the village of Nawaikoke in the east of the country, had previously given birth to twins and triplets, one of whom she has since lost, the private newspaper says.

“I am surprised to deliver five because when I went for a scan at Nsinze health centre, medics told me that I was carrying two children,” she is quoted by the paper as saying.

She has reportedly appealed for help to care for her growing brood.

“I first gave birth to twins, then triplets but lost one and their father; and have now given birth to quintuplets. I’m currently at home and helpless,” Sofiat said.

According to the Monitor, her first husband died and her new partner himself now has a total of 20 children.

Her new husband, Bilali Masale, said the quintuplets bring the number of children he now has to 20.

“I already have many children of my own from other wives and I’m now adding five. I request the government to help me, because I have nothing,” he said.

Maureen Babine, a midwife at Iganga-Nakavule Hospital, said mother and babies were doing well.

For the years I’ve worked in this hospital, I’ve never seen someone giving birth to five children. We have mainly had twins and triplets… The babies were delivered full term but they were just small and need care,” the nurse is quoted as saying.
