Woman suffers serious burns after being thrown into witches’ cauldron at carnival
A woman is receiving treatment for injuries suffered when she was thrown into a witches’ cauldron at a carnival in the south-western German town of Eppingen.
The 18-year-old landed in the hot water, which reached up to her knees and badly scalded her legs.
The cauldron full of scalding hot water was bubbling away over an open fire on a cart that was being pulled by several people. They did not stop to help her after the incident, the police spokesman said.
According to reports, the teenager is currently receiving treatment at a specialist hospital while police investigate the incident.
Police said they were investigating six people for causing serious bodily harm and failure to assist a person in danger. They do not yet know who threw her into the cauldron.
The carnival, which dates back to the 13th century, had some 2000 revellers dressed as witches for an annual “witches’ procession”.
The procession is organized by a local club as part of the regional Fasnet carnival tradition.
Fasnet focuses on witches and devils in elaborate costumes, often with ghoulish, hand-carved wooden masks.
