Women’s World Cup: Argentina eliminate Scotland with 3-3 draw
Scotland crashed out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in dramatic style after throwing away a three-goal lead against Argentina.
Scotland had a 3-0 lead heading into the 74th minute, but a flurry of late goals from Argentina, led by Florencia Bonsegundo, kept their own tournament hopes alive and ended Scotland’s in controversial fashion.
They looked to be cruising but a five-minute capitulation that saw Milagros Menéndez score and Lee Alexander deflect the ball into her own net had them on the brink of disaster.
In added time Florencia Bonsegundo pushed Scotland over the edge from the spot. Alexander thought she had saved Scotland but the penalty was ordered to be retaken by the referee. Bonsegundo then made sure with her second effort in that sealed the draw and Scotland’s dismal fate.
Among the tournament underdogs, Argentina have a chance at making it into the knockout stages after the ridiculous comeback.
Scotland had dominated Argentina for 74 minutes of play and things looked bleak for Argentina, who had yet to score a single goal in the Women’s World Cup.
They previously remained competitive due to strong defense and Vanina Correa’s excellence in goal.
However, Argentina came back in inspiring fashion and received a lifeline from VAR in stoppage time.
