You don’t build great nations by letting your best brains leave, Nigerians react to Ngige’s ‘surplus doctors’ comment
Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, on Wednesday morning, incurred the wrath of Nigerians when he said doctors who want to relocate to other countries to seek greener pastures are free to do so because the nation has enough medical personnel.
Ngige was speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.
WuzupNaija reports that the minister was responding to a question on brain drain and the deliberate recruitment of Nigerian doctors by foreign embassies in Nigeria to the detriment of the nation’s health sector.
In his response, Ngige, who is also a medical doctor, said there was nothing wrong with doctors leaving the country as they would continue to send foreign exchange home which could, in turn, grow the economy.
His comment on the live show has evoked a lot of negative reactions and attacks on his personality from Nigerians on Twitter.
Senator Ben Murray-Bruce representing Bayelsa East aat the National Assembly felt disappointed with the minister’s comment. He wrote on Twitter,
When you think you have heard it all https://t.co/bSe6HV2U4U

A career development expert, Dr Dipo Awojide who described Ngige’s comment as a very dangerous and retrogressive view, wrote on Twitter,
You don’t build great nations by letting your best brains leave. Fix the country so majority of them stay back. https://t.co/uy1WkfBVuF

See some of the reactions:
@WHO recommendation for doctor to patient ratio is 1:600 , and Nigeria is currently at 1:5,715 patients with just 35k doctors;
But our Min. Of Health thinks doctors should become tailors, while Chris Ngige (Min. Of Labour) thinks they should leave.
Tragic! ??♂️ https://t.co/ocjqqTQsNT— Somto Onuchukwu (@chosensomto) April 24, 2019

“Nigeria has surplus doctors, so it’s okay if some relocate to another country”
~ Dr. Chris NgigeThe only natural disaster we have in Nigeria are the human beings in Nigeria especially the leaders

Chris Ngige feels it’s OK to have 1 doctor to 6000 people or even worse. You see why we are not moving forward as a nation?
UK is far more developed than us, they are importing doctors we that we are retrogressing are exporting doctors.— Dr Babatunde (@enodamade) April 24, 2019
This only shows how much this government is out of touch with reality Nigerians face daily. If we truly have enough doctors in our hospitals especially those operated by the government, why are these institutions always congested with patients?

Doctors are free to leave Nigeria b/c the likes of Ngige have stolen morethan enough to fund their medical tourism when the need arises. Until this shenanigans of political officers traveling out for treatment is stopped,we will keep hearing arrogant and stupid talks like this?♀️

He doesn’t do his medical checkups in Nigeria, why would he care? The so called elite are disconnected from the Nigerian reality, sad that we still entertain these jokers , our senior comedians??
