Your purpose here is study, not gangs and cults, UNIUYO VC tells 7,198 matriculating students

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Professor Enefiok Essien, has charged over.7,198 new students of the University to steer clear of cultism because it is evil saying anyone who indulges in it is evil

He cautioned them to be mindful of the group and society they join while on campus, saying some of them might masquerade like religious gathering, study groups or other legitimate social groups.

Professor Essien gave the advice in his address at the 27th Matriculation ceremony of the University, which held for the first time at the institution’s main campus, Nwanniba, road, Akwa Ibom State.

He said,

“The primary purpose for which you have come here is to study, not to join gangs and cults. Cultism is evil and therefore all cult members are evil. Avoid them.

“Have nothing to do with them. Some of them may masquerade like a religious gathering, study groups or other legitimate social groups.

“You have to be very discriminatory about joining or accepting invitation to any group you are not sure of. choose your friends wisely because you are known by the company you keep.”

Essien urged the students to consider themselves among the privilege few to have gotten admission in the University, adding that they should not fritter away the opportunity many are looking for.

He disclosed that out of a total of 32,625 candidates who chose the University of Uyo as their first choice in the UTME examination only 7,198 representing 22 per cent were admitted.

He urged them to study hard to among the University Honour Roll, adding that University has single them out to be a model and motivation to others.

“There are students in the University Honour Roll; these are students who have Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.5 and above. We have singled them out to be a model and a motivation to all of you. If you are determined you can be one of them” he said.
